Govt to import 5,000 taxicabs

The government will invite tenders by May 20 to import around 5,000 taxicabs to ensure comfortable service for the commuters, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader said on Thursday.

The communications ministry has decided to issue licences to the companies to import minimum 250 environment-friendly taxicabs each with an engine capacity of 1,500cc, he said while addressing a view exchange meeting with Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) officials at BRTA Elenbari office.

According to BRTA, the importers had to import minimum 1,000 taxis prior to the decision.

Taxicab import was halted for a long time as most of the importers could not afford to bring 1,000 taxi cabs at a time, he said.

The minister further informed that the ministry has created 11 magistrate posts for forming mobile courts to combat corruption, he said.

He also asked BRTA Chairman ALM Abdur Rahman to maintain transparency in the appointments and all activities of the BRTA.
